WHAT IS RADON GAS?

Radon is a natural radioactive gas, colourless and odourless, which is released from the ground and rocks. It is produced by the decay of uranium present in the soil and rock formations. It enters buildings through cracks in foundations or walls in contact with the ground and tends to accumulate in underground rooms such as cellars and garages. When this invisible gas is breathed in, its decay products are deposited in the lungs and emit ionising radiation. The symptoms of radon gas are not immediate, but prolonged exposure increases the risk of cancer. The WHO has recognised radon as the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking.

HOW TO MEASURE AND ASSESS RADON RISK

To find out whether the concentration exceeds the limits, it is essential to use a radon meter or radon detector. Both devices allow for a reliable assessment of radon risk. Some environmental agencies provide maps of the territory indicating the areas with the highest risk. In Italy, for example, ARPA Lombardia publishes studies and maps of priority radon areas. In Switzerland, the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH/UFSP) lists recognized radon measurement services. However, only a direct measurement in the home can determine the actual exposure.

THE LIMITS SET BY THE WHO AND EUROPE

The WHO and the European Union set the threshold at 300 Bq/m³.

In Switzerland, Minergie-ECO requirements lower the limit to 100 Bq/m³, in accordance with the Federal Office of Public Health.

For this reason, prevention is mandatory in new buildings.

THE DRYTECH TANK AS A RADON GAS BARRIER

La Vasca Drytech® is a radon barrier tested by the Institute of Materials and Construction at SUPSI, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland. The results showed that Drytech waterproof concrete, DRYflex resin, and the formwork hole sealing systems are impermeable to gas.
In this way, Drytech is not only a solution against water, but it also acts as a radon barrier, ensuring dry and healthy underground environments.

SOLUTION WITH SURFACE MEMBRANE

The Drytech Tank is a radon barrier tested by the Institute for Materials and Construction at SUPSI, the University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland. The results have shown that Drytech waterproof concrete, DRYflex resin, and formwork hole sealing systems are impermeable to gas.

This means that Drytech is not only a solution against water, but also acts as a radon barrier, ensuring dry and healthy underground environments.

HOW TO REMOVE RADON FROM A BASEMENT

If you do not want to or cannot install an effective ventilation system, the solution is to seal cracks and joints with hydro-expansive resins and ensure that the foundations are watertight. In new buildings, on the other hand, it is advisable to design basements directly with the Drytech Tank, which acts as a structural barrier against both radon and groundwater for the entire life of the house.
If you are wondering how to find out if you have radon in your home, the first step is always to measure it. Then, if the values are high, take action with a definitive structural solution.
