It is produced by the decay of uranium present in the soil and rock formations. It enters buildings through cracks in foundations or walls in contact with the ground and tends to accumulate in underground rooms such as cellars and garages. When this invisible gas is breathed in, its decay products are deposited in the lungs and emit ionising radiation. The symptoms of radon gas are not immediate, but prolonged exposure increases the risk of cancer.
