SWISS NATIONAL SUPERCOMPUTING CENTRE, LUGANO / Drytech built the 5,500 m² underground watertight structure for the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre in Lugano.
Founded in 1991, the CSCS develops and promotes technical scientific services for the Swiss research community, in the field of high-performance computing.
Il CSCS is an autonomous unit of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH), which ensures Swiss and International researchers can count on the support of the most advanced supercomputing services, as well as carrying out research in the field of scientific computing.
The supercomputer in Lugano is one of the most modern and efficient in the world. Cooling is ensured by water from the Ceresio (Lake Lugano), via 2 km long pipes which pump water from the lake to the plant. This system guarantees a significant energy saving, considering the high temperatures produced by the supercomputer.
For waterproofing penetrations, DRYset sleeves have been placed around the items passing through, followed by injections of waterproofing foam resin covering the entire thickness of the structure.
The structure was designed by Luigi Tunesi from Pregassona and built by the constructing firms Implenia and Garzoni from Lugano which, among other things, used the largest crane in Switzerland for positioning the prefabricated roof beams on the hangar.
